Awoyaya Outreach 2024: Teenage Pregnancy Awareness and Its Consequences

Awoyaya Outreach 2024: Teenage Pregnancy Awareness and Its Consequences

On August 6, 2024, Racheal & Teens Foundation held one of our most impactful community outreaches yet — the Awoyaya Teenage Pregnancy Awareness Outreach — at the Baale's Compound in Awoyaya, Lagos.

The Challenge We Set Out to Address

Teenage pregnancy remains one of the most pressing challenges facing vulnerable communities across Nigeria. It disrupts education, limits economic opportunities, and puts young girls at serious health risks. But this is not just a girls' issue — boys need to be part of the conversation too.

That's exactly what drove this outreach: creating awareness about teenage pregnancy and its consequences among vulnerable and underprivileged teenagers in the Awoyaya community.

What We Aimed to Achieve

Our objectives were clear:

  • Educate teenagers on the dangers and far-reaching consequences of teenage pregnancy
  • Equip both boys and girls with knowledge to make informed decisions about their lives and futures
  • Provide essential support materials to encourage healthy living and continued education

By the Numbers

We set out to reach 143 teenagers, and we came close — 140 teenagers actively participated in the programme. The turnout was a powerful testament to the community's hunger for this kind of guidance.

Programme Highlights

The outreach was structured into two separate sessions:

  1. Boys' Session — Focused on understanding their role in preventing teenage pregnancy, consent, and responsible behavior
  2. Girls' Session — Covered reproductive health education, the consequences of early pregnancy, and building confidence to say no to peer pressure

Beyond the awareness talks, we distributed:

  • 📚 School materials to support continued education
  • 🩹 Sanitary pads for the girls
  • 👕 Clothes for participants in need
  • 🍽️ Food, snacks, and drinks for all attendees

Community Support & Transparency

This outreach was made possible through the generous support of our donors and the personal commitment of our founder, Racheal Ochuko.

Source Amount
Anonymous Donor ₦410,000
Racheal Ochuko (Personal) ₦250,000
Total Funds Received ₦660,000

Every naira was accounted for. Our total expenditure was ₦649,000, covering materials and souvenirs, logistics and setup, transportation, and refreshments for all 140 participants. A remaining balance of ₦11,000 was carried forward.

We also received material donations including clothes, sanitary pads, school supplies, and food items from generous supporters.

Looking Forward

The Awoyaya outreach reinforced what we've always known: when you give teenagers the right information, they make better choices. The engagement we saw from both boys and girls was incredibly encouraging.

We are sincerely grateful to every donor, volunteer, and well-wisher who made this event possible. Your contributions helped us raise awareness, educate 140 young lives, and provide them with essential support for their well-being and future.
